One top headline in the AI space to know:

🦸‍♂️ Marvel's AI-Generated Backlash

Marvel's hotly anticipated new miniseries ‘Secret Invasion’ debuted on Wednesday — but while the release stirred the pot on social media, it wasn’t for the reasons you might expect.

The studio is facing backlash for the series’ opening credits — designed by Method Studios — which were generated by artificial intelligence, director Ali Selim confirmed to news Outlet Polygon.

While Selim said that he found this AI-led approach fitting with the show's themes, the revelation sparked significant anger from the public.

Many on Twitter expressed concerns that AI tech could replace the need for graphic designers and animators, further threatening job security in the creative industry.

And even employees from the actual show chimed in on the discourse:

The conversation becomes even more polarizing while happening with the backdrop of the ongoing WGA strike — where many writers are already pushing back against the use of AI in the industry.

However, when combing through the anger on the Twitter timeline — a repeated theme that came up was that AI is basically a ‘plagiarism machine’ — doing nothing more than mashing up already created work. Which feels misleading at best, and outright wrong at worst.

But as we’ve seen with other early adopter moments with new tech (crypto, NFTs come to mind) — the initial public sentiment can often be hard to change, no matter how far from reality it might be.

So the question remains — is AI the future of creative production? Or a slippery slope towards automation over talent?

Marvel’s response will be an interesting one to watch, as this is surely not the last we’ve seen of the technology in Hollywood.
