Learn one new skill in the AI world:

šŸ—£ļø Create Your Own Custom AI Avatar With HeyGen and Canva

Creating unique and engaging content is crucial for standing out in today’s 24/7 social landscape.

And what’s one of the best ways to scale a social account or go viral on your social platform of choice? Captivating video.

But in the past, you might’ve needed to actually get in front of the camera yourself (gasp), or have equipment like a green screen to get high-quality results.

Luckily, AI tools have made it easier than ever to create personalized AI avatars, and bring your own images to life for a video experience that will stop users from scrolling past your content.

Follow the steps below to create your very own AI avatar using HeyGen’s plugin on Canva:

1ļøāƒ£ Create Your Character/Image

  • If you're designing from scratch, generate the character or image in Midjourney (or another text-to-image alternative) to use as an avatar.

  • Alternatively, you can upload a previously created image — for this example, we’ll be using our 70's era Drake character from this thread, scaled to 16:9:

Drake as a 70's era musician, GQ photography, magazine photo shoot —ar 16:9

2ļøāƒ£ Access HeyGen Plugin on Canva

  • Open Canva and look for the HeyGen plugin in the 'Apps' tab on the left:

  • Select the plugin to get started.

3ļøāƒ£ Upload or Select Your Avatar

  • Upload your image or choose from the variety of avatars HeyGen has available.

  • If you plan to overlay the avatar on a separate graphic, remove the background first (you can use Canva’s background remover tool or a separate online solution). In our example, we used the full image without altering it.

4ļøāƒ£ Add Your Avatar's Speech

  • Time to write your script! Type what you want your avatar to say in the script field to hear your words come to life.

  • Tip: Use dashes and sentence breaks to improve the voice output flow.

  • Explore different voice options, languages, and tones to find the perfect match for your avatar. For our example, we chose Dennis, which is described as ā€œEnglish / Male / United States / Cheerfulā€.

5ļøāƒ£ Generate Your AI Video

  • Click 'Generate AI Video' and wait for the magic to happen!

  • Within seconds, you'll have your animated and speaking avatar ready to be placed onto a Canva graphic or used as a finished product.
